I take the craft of embroidery and question its process within a wearable object capacity. It blurs the boundaries between high art jewelry and domestic craft techniques.
It offers the viewer a chance to think about what is more precious; the laborious nature of hand embroidery, or the precious metal or gems that it is juxtaposed with?
My work is an exploration of embroidery as both an embellishing tool, and a construction tool and I derive my combinations from exploratory textile collages that I create in lieu of a traditional sketchbook. The switching from cloth to metal processes fascinates and drives me as a maker; I enjoy using this old craft of stitching to marry together materials of contrasting weights and surface qualities. My work is also increasing in size now my children are getting older and I have more time. I am beginning to almost track their growth in my work and it’s a really interesting way to visually see their change and growth within my own objects.
