Caroline Toro was born in Santurce Puerto Rico in 1979, to parents Lourdes Rodríguez and José Toro as a young child moved back and forth from Puerto Rico to the US and back several times, but her main roots and education were formed on the island. During her adolescent years her education in the arts was becoming more guided by enrolling in after school art classes offered at the Liga de Arte in Old San Juan. This was pivotal in her choice to later on study Art as a mayor in the University of Puerto Rico from which she graduated with a bachelors degree in Painting. Years later she continued studies at the Fashion Institute of Technology where she studied Textile and Surface Design. Shortly after graduating she worked in the fashion industry as an Art Director’s Assistant at Josephine Chaus Inc. Disillusioned with the way the fashion industry functions, she moved back to Puerto Rico and started developing textiles that later her mother would make garments with and they created Madre Hija Design in 2008. Many life events including a growing family halted all hopes of developing further the brand. In 2010 -2013 economic hardship on the Island once again forced millions of Puerto Ricans to leave and again she was forced to return to the United States with her first child, almost two years old at the moment. Moving to her parents house whom where living in Fort Lauderdale Fl. That gave Madre Hija a bit of an opportunity to try again in joining forces with her mother, a few ideas came about but nothing was transformed into a business. By 2016 after living a little over a year in Florida she moved her family to Austin Texas, here had a second child and started weaving first creating wall hangings later weaving with beads and semiprecious stones. This became a serious practice where many hours are dedicated to craftsmanship and design. In spring of 2019 Madre Hija Design although not the duo it intended in its beginning decided to officially launch their website and Madre Hija Design was reborn.
