Handpicked is a series of art jewelry focussing on makers’ hands. Photos of hands at work are transformed into picture jewelry on wooden bases. By enshrining the photographs of hands in votive-like structures, the process of making is equated to prayer. While the photographic representation of hands is not new, it is often restricted to galleries and is considered elite. Wearing photographs as jewelry on the body initiates a dialogue about those who make the products that we wear and use. Many pieces can be worn as a brooch or a pendant. This gives the wearer control over where the jewelry is worn on the body and how it is viewed.
This series also draws attention to India’s developing picture jewelry scene. It also expands the definition and scope of what art jewelry is and could be. The editorial presentation of the jewelry as street fashion photographs prompts us to think about wearing art jewelry in everyday life.
Handpicked has been created by Divya N, a designer, and educator from Chennai, India. She founded the jewelry brand Sayuri in 2008. At the present, she teaches Fashion Communication and has worked on several projects in the Indian craft sector. The virtual exhibition of Handpicked showcases photographs by Divya N, Ram Keshav, and Praneeth Reddy.
