Chu Winnie Cheung
Toronto, ON
Chu Winnie Cheung is a Chinese contemporary jewelry artist based in Toronto. Cheung uses paper as a medium to study clouds and freedom. She repeatedly writes the Chinese character for “cloud” on Xuan paper, the traditional Chinese calligraphy paper, then tears, sculpts, and polishes it into form, reshaping and exploring the posture of freedom. Through layers of sanding and refining, her works often reveal stone-like textures in grey tones, yet remain incredibly lightweight. Cheung takes shapes born in nature, re-expresses and restores the primordial and natural connection between human and nature.
Cheung’s work has been exhibited internationally, including at the Marzee International Graduate Show (the Netherlands) and the 33rd Japan Jewellery Competition (Tokyo). She was a 2023 New Talents Award nominee (Klimt02, Barcelona) and presented her solo exhibition Void at Craft Ontario as part of DesignTO 2025. She previously held a solo exhibition in Shanghai and will participate in the Steinbeisser Project (Netherlands) in June 2026.
